I am Writing You down Here on Earth

I AM WRITING YOU DOWN HERE ON EARTH is the director’s closing of accounts with his parents. Under the assistance of hypnosis Jaakko Ilkka Virtanen regresses back through his identity, family photographs, emotions, his mother’s letters being read aloud by an actress. The director is now eight years old. Mother has committed suicide. Over a continuous period of hypnosis sessions, with the seductive grace of an eloquent camera, the director’s childhood memories open deeper wounds. The film arrives at its most touching moment when the director, at the age of three, re-enters the space of his father’s death bed. The thematic material of this film is varied, its appeal being the acknowledgment of its own subjectivity, an honest portrayal of a particular life in the 1960s, a particular child’s inner development and a particular director venting his anger and looking for forgiveness.
