Marry Me / Heirate mich

Marry Me

Whilst on holiday in Cuba, Erik from Hamburg meets a beautiful woman from Havana, Gladis. „It was love at first sight“, he says. One year later, Gladis and her 8-year-old son Omarito board a plane to leave their island home for Germany. The first weeks are filled with visiting parents, eating plum cake, setting into school and dealing with bureaucratic affairs, something Gladis is strangely familiar with. Gladis defends her hard won independence at all costs, and has to struggle as hard to learn her first German words as she does to keep herself from being smothered by Erik’s overpowering love. The initial euphoria is ground down by the daily clash of two cultures and inevitable communication problems. Unexpected problems appear. And when one day she is confronted by her past, her relationship with Erik and her existence in Germany are called into question. A film about departure and arrival, the battle of the sexes and the clash of two cultures.
